Appointment of Sarah McMahon as Special Advisor to the SVPAA

June 17, 2019

Dear Members of the Rutgers Community:

It is my pleasure to announce that Associate Professor Sarah McMahon will assume the role of Special Advisor for Campus Climate on July 1, 2019. She will report to me on matters involving the University’s efforts to address sexual violence and relationship abuse.

Sarah McMahon is Director of the Center on Violence Against Women & Children at the Rutgers School of Social Work where she is also an Associate Professor. She is also the Chancellor’s Scholar for Violence Prevention.  In her role as Special Advisor for Campus Climate, Dr. McMahon will provide leadership across the Rutgers campuses to coordinate efforts to address sexual violence and relationship abuse.  This will include providing guidance for university-wide initiatives to ensure that they are consistent, inclusive, and aligned with best practices. She has led a number of research projects related to campus violence funded at the federal, state, and local level, and currently leads the Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) grant for the university inclusive of every campus. In 2014, she was invited to collaborate with the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault through the testing of a campus climate survey tool.  Dr. McMahon was appointed to the NJ Campus Sexual Assault Task Force by Governor Christie,  and as co-chair of the Safe and Inclusive Campuses Workgroup for the N.J. State Plan for Higher Education by Governor Murphy. She also serves as past Chair of the N.J. Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board, and current Chair of the Advisory Board for the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

Rutgers is fortunate to have Professor McMahon’s expertise and leadership in this important endeavor.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. Lee
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
